Dennington Eco Schools

Our School is committed to creating an ever greener and environmentally friendly place for your children to learn in.  We aim for every pupil to `think green and live green` taking their knowledge and enthusiasm into the wider community.  Whether that be through active involvement with litter picks in the area or recycling, reducing waste, conserving water, composting or gardening in the school.

We have been awarded the Silver Award by the Eco-Schools programme and are now striving towards the coveted Green Award.

We feel it is important for the children to take an active part in every aspect of the Eco programme, and as such we have an Eco-Council, which is pupil lead and well supported.  Every class has representatives and if any issues/concerns/ideas arise from any pupil they are aired and given credence at our regular meetings.  The Eco-Council has 2 notice boards in the school and a clip board for any ideas to be posted for the next meeting.

As a result of our Eco-Council we have completed the following:

Installed `HIPPOS` (Water saving devices) in every loo.
Held an Eco-Code competition – (Won by Tom Cole)
Additional compost bins for kitchen and garden waste.
Eco Assemblies informing the whole school of our aims and ideals.

Our large scale project, to help us on the way to Green Status is the installation of Sun lights, a natural source of light for the corridors to replace the need for electric lighting  all day.

It is our intention that the children will gain an enthusiasm and understanding for the world around them and they will want to care and look after it.

Green, Clean, Lean School Scene!

Over the next term and beyond we are aimingto make our school a cleaner, healthier and greener place for all. We intend to do this by setting up a series of challenges where pupils (and adults too!) can gain (and lose!) points for their class. Each class starts with 100 points and the aim is to be the class which has the most points at the end of each term. The winning team can choose to participate in a variety of activities e.g. Trip to the seaside, theatre / cinema, leisure centre, 10 pin bowling, swimming, Thormham woods, etc.

So what are the challenges?

  1. The Tidiest Classroom - to be decided by the caretaker on any 2 days in the week the caretaker will decide which class is the tidiest and award them points per class.
  2. Clean plates / healthy lunch boxes - the MDSA's / Cook will check 1 day per week to see who has finished / eaten their hot meal without any waste and award 1 point per person. A healthy lunch box must contain 2 items from this list - fruit, vegetables, brown / grain / wholemeal bread, salad / healthy snack bar / pasta and they too will receive 1 point per person.
  3. Positive Play - Adults on duty will awars 1 point for positive / good behaviour which they observe. This could be for safe play, cooperative play, sharing equipment, putting equipment away etc. Misbehaviour, rude or aggressive behaviour will result in pupils being deducted 1 point each time they re-offend after 1 warning.
  4. Fitness - for 2 weeks (weather permitting) any pupil who walks / cycles to school will be awarded 1 point. Any pupil travelling by bus automatically gets 1 point as they are using public transport. Any pupil who travels bhy car and walks in from the village hall or pub car park will also gain 1 point. If pupils attend a lunchtime or after school club they are awarded 1 point.
  5. The 3 R's - any pupil who helps recycle / reduce / re-use, which includes bringing in newspapers / yoghurt pots etc. (all items to be givento Mr Walker). Checking that class / orange bins are appropriately used will be awarded 1 point.
  6. There will be a secret Energy Police who will be watching for energy wasters - so beware, lights left on is a serious offense!

These are guidelines of course and we expect all to use their common sense when allocating / deducting points.

Sustainable Education

Now we are leading the way internationally as Mr Walker (our Head Teacher) is preparing to spread the word in Australia next March (2009).
